management and some members of the parliamentary media committee have called for an increase in receiver licence fees in Slovakia.
According to Medialne, they argue this is essential for the development of public service broadcasting. RTVS will need more resources to launch a third channel, the annual cost of running will be at least €10 million.
Receiver licence fees currently cost €4.64 a month per household and it has been proposed increasing them to €7 a month. They have been unchanged for 13 years and this would be in keeping with inflation.
It was pointed out that although the monthly fee is €7 in the neighbouring Czech Republic, it has two and a half times the number of households as Slovakia.
